The sewage spills that occurred last week in Costa Teguise, and which some residents claimed had been there for “six days”, were caused by the collapse of the collectors in the sewage pipes, due to the waste and wipes that people throw down the toilet.
“There are quite a few tourists and residents who throw papers in the bathroom, and those two pumps, which are next to the kiosk on La Ola street, became clogged,” explained the Councilor for Roads and Works, Eugenio Robayna, on Radio Lanzarote – Onda Cero.
For this reason, the Teguise mayor has asked citizens for their collaboration, both residents and tourists who visit the town. “I told my Tourism colleague to send a little letter to the hotels, and that they please respect. Not only tourists, but also restaurants,” says the councilor.
Regarding the problem of spills, the councilor assures that it is being “corrected and repaired” by Canal Gestión Lanzarote, since the one in charge of the incidents is filtered water.
The presence of sewage in Costa Teguise, due to sanitation incidents, is something that often occurs in the tourist town. For this reason, Eugenio Robayna has announced on Radio Lanzarote that the municipality has a project of “4 million euros”, of which they have “almost 1.4” to execute, to place a new collector in the area.
“What we are going to do is a new work, in the new part of Costa Teguise, and we will continue to grow inland,” he explained. In addition, he points out that they have planned another project for the future of “11 million euros”, which consists of expanding the station that is next to the Tahíche Penitentiary Center.
“We have projects to try to improve, because now it is time to reform the sanitation of Costa Teguise and the rest of the towns.” Regarding the municipal proposals, the mayor maintains that they “have to start being implemented”, and look for economic funds “in Europe or in the Government of the Canary Islands.”
“We have the projects from Teguise, the expansion of sanitation to be able to have 70,000 inhabitants in the municipality,” Robayna stated.
