The Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, together with councillors Óscar Noda and Óscar Pérez of the Mixed Group, has requested the holding of an extraordinary plenary session so that the president of the Cabildo, Oswaldo Betancort, gives explanations about the serious irregularities reported in the Amavir Tías and Amavir Haría elderly residences.
The initiative comes after the public complaints made in recent days by the Socialist Party and by the Comisiones Obreras union, as well as after the dissemination of videos recorded inside these centers that show situations that have generated deep social concern for the treatment and conditions of the users.
In the request registered before the island institution, the opposition raises a battery of questions aimed at clarifying whether the specifications regulating the public service in these residences are being met, including key aspects such as staff rosters, room equipment, user food, or the correct awarding of places financed with public funds.
Likewise, the appearance of the president of the Cabildo has been requested for him to report in detail on the measures adopted by the institution after learning about the serious deficiencies detected in these resources and after the dissemination of videos recorded in the facilities in which intolerable abuses towards some users are observed.
The spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Ariagona González, has pointed out that the Cabildo "cannot look the other way because it is the administration responsible for supervising these services".
“We are talking about elderly people, about their dignity and their well-being. The Cabildo not only finances these places, it has the responsibility to control and supervise that the services are provided under the conditions established in the specifications and with the treatment our elderly deserve. When complaints appear and such serious images are disseminated, the institution has to explain what controls have been carried out and what is failing,” he stated.
González underlined that "the Lanzarotean citizenry deserves clear explanations about what happened and about the actions taken by the island institution".
“The families and society of Lanzarote need to know what has happened, if the specifications regulating the service were being complied with and what measures are going to be adopted so that situations like those we have seen cease and do not happen again,” he added.
