Lanzarote Acción Civil has publicly denounced the situation of abandonment and insalubrity presented by a plot located between Norte street and Brasilia street, in the heart of Arrecife. According to the organization, the space has become over time "an authentic open-air landfill, where waste, garbage, and abandoned belongings accumulate."
Neighbors and merchants in the area assure that they have been reporting this situation to the Arrecife City Council for some time "without obtaining a response or effective solutions." They state they feel "tired of conveying their complaints to the municipal administration without measures being adopted to resolve a problem that directly affects the image of the neighborhood and the quality of life of those who live or work in the area."
The plot is located in an area with significant commercial activity, where "businesses are making an effort to revitalize the area and attract residents and visitors". However, the accumulation of trash and dirt they say "is seriously deteriorating the surroundings and generating a feeling of abandonment that worries residents and business owners".
Added to this situation is, furthermore, the presence of rats, which has increased the alarm among residents. Many consider "unacceptable that in the heart of the capital's urban area there is a focus of insalubrity of these characteristics".
From Lanzarote Civil Action they remind that the municipal ordinance on cleaning and waste management establishes that the owners of plots must maintain them in adequate conditions of hygiene, safety and health, avoiding the accumulation of garbage. Likewise, the City Council has powers to inspect these spaces, demand their cleaning and open sanctioning files if situations of abandonment are detected.
For all this, the platform requests the City Council an urgent action that includes the inspection of the plot, its immediate cleaning and the deratization of the space, in order to end a problem that, according to residents and merchants, "they have been enduring for too long without solutions being adopted."
