"The connection with Africa represents an increase in improving competitiveness for the island's business sector, but it can also be important news for the population in general and not only for Lanzarote but for all of the Canary Islands." That has been the first assessment of the Lanzarote Chamber of Commerce, after learning the news that Naviera Armas will connect the ports of Arrecife and Tarfaya with a new maritime line.
However, the Chamber also states that "the link with Morocco highlights the need for approval of the PIF (Border Inspection Post), for which the Chamber is working, to favor the direct import of fresh products, an element that would directly affect the price of the shopping basket." In addition, they add that this news "shows, once again, that the port of Los Mármoles has sufficient commercial demand and, therefore, urgently needs the improvement of its facilities."
The announcement made this Friday by Naviera Armas comes after finally discarding the creation of a route between Fuerteventura and Tarfaya, as initially planned, so the Chamber's businessmen have also added that they trust that "Fuerteventura will soon obtain the declaration of a Schengen port so that it can, together with Lanzarote, benefit from this route with Africa."
