The participatory response of dozens of residents of the municipality of Yaiza and visitors who came to the Plaza de Playa Blanca last Sunday from other parts of Lanzarote, "is a sign of citizen interest and sensitivity to guarantee the protection of their pets and the concern that awakens among children and adults the high rate of animal abandonment that is registered as a whole in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands," they point out from the City Council. Consequently, the mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, anticipates that "it will not be the last initiative that we will carry out through the Animal Protection Area of the City Council, always counting on the support of protection associations, with which we periodically develop a diversity of activities aimed at informing and raising awareness about responsible animal ownership."

The day of animal welfare and responsible ownership addressed, with didactic talks given by veterinarians and trainers, topics to take into account if we are willing to share our home with a pet, "which is not a stuffed animal, it is a living being," recalled one of the invited veterinarians.

Guidelines for the insertion of a pet in the environment of a home, which in the case of an abandoned and mistreated animal may be afraid and even aggressive, were some of the aspects exposed in the southern meeting, which also addressed the obligations and animal health and how we should act following the established protocols when we detect a lost animal or in a situation of abandonment.

"We are very satisfied with the manifest participation of our neighbors and the work and support offered by protectors such as Doggys del Sur and La Casa de las Estrellas, groups totally dedicated to the cause of animal welfare, with whom, of course, we share sensitivities, concerns and actions," says Águeda Cedrés, Councilor of the Animal Protection Area of Yaiza.

Drawing Contest

Yaiza opened a call inviting schoolchildren from the municipality in the third and fourth grades of primary education to express in drawings their opinion on animal welfare and paint initiatives to make pets happier. The response of boys and girls has also been more than satisfactory, not only for the content of their proposals, but also for the good number of drawings that exceeded two hundred creations.

The City Council, represented by the councilors Águeda Cedrés, Ángel Domínguez and Silvia Santana, presented the awards to the winning schoolchildren. They are: Aridai Martín, Leo Revilla, Lara Magistral, Ancor Lama, Omaira Nañez, Iván Rodríguez, Alba Navarro, Igara, Dulce Alama Jaramillo, Luz Marina Mebina and Noa Carrara.

The day also hosted a parade of dogs cared for at the Yaiza Animal Shelter who are looking for an adoption home, accompanied by an informative talk about the responsibilities involved in adoption.

The Yaiza Center now has 20 dogs waiting for a home and the statistics of the Canary Islands indicate that only 20 percent of abandoned animals find a foster family. Águeda Cedrés highlights that "the dogs are very well cared for and cared for by the municipal staff, and equally pampered by volunteers from the Doggys del Sur protector, who take the animals for walks and help us find adoption homes inside and outside the Canary Islands."
