Last Tuesday, the Society of Culture, Recreation and Sports Torrelavega received a cultural visit from the residents of the municipality of Yaiza. The act was promoted by Víctor Julián Cáceres, a resident of Femés who, in the two visits he had made to the Torrelavega Society on the occasion of the 'Y ocho. Homage to a small island' around La Graciosa, contacted Edmundo de la Hoz as president of the Society.
In those meetings he commented that, although the closing of the exhibition was on the 18th, he should stay a few more days because he was making arrangements for the residents of the municipality of Yaiza to see this exhibition. In this way they celebrated a cultural day in which the fact that Víctor Julián has always had San Marcial del Rubicón very linked to the eighth island was combined, so the visit came to be a twinning.
Viewing of the photographs
The night began with the arrival of the residents of Yaiza. A visit that unfortunately was somewhat diminished because that same day a lady from Femés passed away. But still a large number of residents from the municipality of Yaiza attended and enjoyed the exhibition by viewing the photographs.
Then some speeches were given. First, the words of Antonio Félix Martín Hormiga, member of the culture committee of the Torrelavega Society.
The expert commented on topics related to La Graciosa as well as San Marcial del Rubicón. Afterwards, Víctor Julián Cánceres also approached the lectern to address his neighbors, thank the Torrelavega Society and the Yaiza City Council, which kindly collaborated with a bus so that the neighbors could make this visit. Finally, Edmundo de la Hoz addressed the attendees, who welcomed the group of neighbors and told them that the doors of the Society are open.
Music
The cultural event continued with the musical performance, from Las Breñas, came the Janubio band, men and women from the south of the Island. The band was formed several years ago from the Municipal School of Folklore under the direction of Clotildo Martín and gradually became independent until the formation was constituted.
They have a recorded album and their activity does not cease. In addition, they are the hosts of the Víctor Fernández Gopar Seguidillas Festival that is celebrated on the occasion of the Los Remedios festival in the southern municipality. The Janubio band arrived at the Torrelavega Society with a seguidilla with lyrics by the teacher Víctor Fernández Gopar followed by some malagueñas and folías.
Exchange of gifts
At the end of these songs there was an exchange of gifts. On behalf of Yaiza, together with the residents was the Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Pedro Viñoli Ascensión who presented the set of books 'The history of the Rubicon' to Edmundo de la Hoz for the Torrelavega Society, while Julián Cáceres presented these same books but so that from the Society they can send it to the local mayor of La Graciosa Margarita Páez. Then Víctor Julián made a gift that no one expected. It is a painting in which the volcano, the hat of La Graciosa and a pitera agave are mixed with the name of Yaiza that was greeted with applause among those present.
After the gift exchange ceremony, the band played again, this time an isa parrandera. The public asked for encores and in the end they did two more, the last of which was 'El escarabajo'. Once the performance was over, a refreshment was passed around, given by the Yaiza City Council for the delight of all attendees.
