Acn

The first teaching activity of this year 2006 will be the course 'Socio-educational reality of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder', a seminar that will be held in the CICCA room of Arrecife de Lanzarote, from February 6 to 10, 2005, and whose registration period began today, Monday, January 23.

This is the first of the teaching activities of the University Extension Program of the University of La Laguna (ULL) which, one more year, has been prepared by the Education and Culture area of the Cabildo de Lanzarote under the academic tutelage of the Vice-Rectorate of University Extension of the aforementioned university and which will take place during the months of January to June of this year.

Both institutions have planned the realization of a total of five courses, to which will be added the nine planned with the ULPGC.

Presentation

The official presentation of the ULL courses will be made on February 1 when the representatives of the ULL travel to the Island. The other four university extension courses of the ULL planned are: 'Social movements as a democratic challenge to current society', 'Socio-personal skills for change', 'New business alternatives for sustainable development', and 'Aggression as discourse: the psychological dimension of violence'.

The primary objective of the course 'Socio-educational reality of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder' is to make known the Attention Deficit Disorder, with or without Hyperactivity (ADHD) to the medical and educational community of Lanzarote, as well as to the affected families.

ADHD is a neurobiological disorder characterized by difficulties in maintaining attention and concentration, with an excess of motor activity and impulsivity. While these characteristics are normal in any child, in the case of children with ADHD, it occurs with much greater intensity and frequency than expected for their age and the context in which they appear, and can interfere in their learning process and social relationships.

The direction and teaching of the seminar will be in charge of Dr. Isabel Hernández Valle, associate professor of the Department of Evolutionary Psychology and Education of the University of La Laguna and Dr. Néstor Vicente Torres Darias, professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of La Laguna and president of the Tenerife Association of Mothers and Fathers of Children and Adolescents with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ATIMANA-DAH).

Recipients

The primary recipients of this course are teachers, secondary school teachers and educators, students of Psychology, Psychopedagogy, Teaching, Pedagogy and Medicine, mothers and fathers of children with ADHD and the rest of the population interested in the subject.

The registration period began today, Monday, January 23, and will last until February 3, or until places are filled. This University Extension activity consists of 20 teaching hours, which can be validated for two credits of free choice, according to the Official Offer of Free Choice of the ULL.

Registration procedures will be carried out in the new premises of the Department of Education and Universities, located in the Casa de los Arroyo (Avda. Coll, 3, de Arrecife de Lanzarote). Places are limited and will be occupied in strict order of registration.
