"Siete en la Octava" is an initiative launched by Eduardo Hernández Hernández and Verónica Páez Páez, winners of the project promoted by the General Directorate of Youth of the Government of the Canary Islands Jóvenes Puntales 2017 in the dynamic category. A work that arises from their concern for the loss of cultural heritage, transmitted by their grandparents; and how they increasingly observe that visitors attracted by the eighth island return to their destinations of origin without knowing the way of life and local culture.
At the presentation, which took place in the parish hall and before a large audience, they stressed that the "proposal aims to hold various meetings in La Graciosa with young people from all the islands to exchange cultural experiences, learn about their lifestyle and reconnect with native identity, while participants enjoy theirs in a sustainable way and revaluing the intangible heritage of the Canary Islands.
As they explained to the neighbors, family and friends who attended the event, "the development of the idea will not only be based on the organization of these youth meetings, but also seeks the involvement of locals through the creation of a cultural association, which will enrich the work line of Siete en la Octava".
One of the main foundational pillars, which characterizes the entity promoted by these young talents, will focus on carrying out cultural and environmental activities among its neighbors and associates in order to continue spreading the ethnographic values of Graciosa. According to Hernández, "thanks to the multigenerational collaboration of adults and children, the set of customs and heritage signs of La Graciosa will remain rooted in our collective memory".
The presentation of Siete en la Octava, which was selected among 166 regional proposals as the best "dynamic idea", is included in the program of events developed by the Government of the Canary Islands on the occasion of the celebration of May 30, Canary Islands Day, under the motto "We are unique".
