Two towns in Lanzarote registered heavy rainfall in one hour last January

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has published its climatic advance that analyzes the temperature and rainfall data recorded last January. Two towns in Lanzarote suffered heavy rains in the first month of the year: Haría, in the municipality of the same name, and Las Vegas, in Tías.According to the aforementioned data, the town of Haría registered an intensity of 27.6 millimeters of rain per hour at the Aemet station located in the municipal cemetery. The biggest downpour of the month fell at 3:45 in the morning of January 2nd at this point on the island. It should be noted that the reference values indicate that between 15 and 30 millimeters per hour is considered heavy precipitationAfter the town of Haría, in Las Vegas 16.8 millimeters per hour were reached, on January 5 at 12:55 PM. This same town also reached the third point with the highest rainfall intensity, with 10.8 millimeters per hour.

 

An especially wet year

Despite January being an especially rainy and humid month in Lanzarote, the highest monthly rainfall records in the archipelago occurred in Tenerife and Gran Canaria.In the Canary Islands, the first month of the year was especially humid, 186% more than the expected value and the 15th most humid since data began to be recorded in 1961. Cold was felt in both provinces, with an average temperature of 14.5 degrees (0.3 degrees below normal)The biggest anomaly occurred in the maximum temperature, which fell in the province of Las Palmas 0.4 degrees below what was expected and up to 0.6 in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Despite the feeling of cold, the minimum temperatures did show a warm anomaly, 0.2 degrees above normal. The first days of the year even reached a degree of mismatchRegarding tropical nights, those above 20 degrees, none were recorded at any of the Aemet stations in the Canary Islands this January or in January 2025. In contrast, in January 2024, a maximum number of stations recorded tropical nights: a total of 77

 

Lanzarote and La Graciosa registered the lowest highs

La Graciosa and Lanzarote registered the lowest maximum temperatures in the Canary Islands, of 22.8 and 23.4 degrees, respectively. In the case of the eighth island, it was recorded at the heliport station, while in Lanzarote it was in Playa Honda, at César Manrique Airport. These maximums were reached on January 19 and 14.

Regarding the minimums, La Graciosa also registered the least high minimum temperature of the archipelago. It reached 17.1 degrees last January 29. In contrast, Lanzarote positioned itself as the fourth highest minimum temperature, up to 18.4 degrees at the Playa Blanca station last January 3. 

In general, the average temperature of the archipelago has been below the average for the reference period, reaching below 13 degrees on average at the beginning of the month.
