A total of three hundred secondary school students have traveled the "sustainable path" in Lanzarote within the framework of the Science and Innovation Weeks in the Canary Islands 2023. This initiative is organized by the Ministry of Universities, Science and Innovation and Culture of the Government of the Canary Islands, directed by Migdalia Machín, through the Canary Agency for Research, Innovation and the Information Society (ACIISI).
And there is agriculture that does not need land, but agriculture without water is not possible. To learn more about the culture of water, kilometer zero agriculture and biodiversity, the SCIC23 went to Lanzarote, a pioneering island that has long embarked on the path of sustainability and has an inescapable commitment as a Biosphere Reserve.
Councilor Migdalia Machín stressed that these concepts must continue to permeate institutions, companies, countrymen and new generations, articulating all social actors against climate change, adding the actions of companies, public administrations, NGOs and people.
This context inspires the activity Let's activate sustainability, taught by the entity Senderismo Lanzarote, in which several groups from the IES César Manrique and CEO Argana educational centers, both located in Arrecife, participated.
The students toured three themed interpretation trails, on clean water and sanitation yesterday and today, production, responsible consumption and kilometer zero food, and the life of the terrestrial ecosystem of Lanzarote. A unique experience with which they were able to learn and value knowledge linked to each of these contents in its historical, botanical and geological aspects, in addition to enjoying beautiful walks through lava fields, rocks with impossible shapes and black and reddish lands, in contrast to white houses and the blue sky.
In addition to this activity, the creation of the 'Mural of Time' by secondary school students from educational centers is being developed in Lanzarote within the framework of the SCIC23. This is a panoramic mural of the creation of the universe, with four large blocks: the Big Bang, formation of atoms and galaxies, of the Milky Way and the Solar System; the origin of life, first prokaryotic cells, symbiosis, eukaryotes, multicellular, great cataclysms, etcetera; the Homo genus, tools, fire, wheel, migrations, symbolism, etcetera, and written history, cultures around the world, justice and society, inventions. The activity is taught by Biosfera Lanzarote of the Island Council.
There are also architecture workshops scheduled for primary school and the general public, to be held in Tinajo, San Bartolomé and La Graciosa, taught by the architect Guayarmina Rijo Molina, littlegurimo, who, taking as a premise No. 11 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): Sustainable Cities and Communities: making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable, aims to bring these concepts closer to apply them in the island's environment.
And the Towards the digital transformation of the Canary Islands Conference, which brought together the best professionals and leading authorities in Digital Transformation at the Lanzarote Innovation Hub last week to analyze from the public and private perspective, how the digitization of people and processes is an essential pillar in any company or entity, and in which Councilor Migdalia Machín participated.
The activities of the Science and Innovation Weeks in the Canary Islands are for the whole of society, free, with a high scientific and technological interest and with a common premise: the interactivity and active participation of the attending public.
