The Transport Cooperative of Lanzarote, Lanztransport, has called a concentration on July 25 before the problem of jable extraction in the area between Muñique and Soo, the waste management of the Zonzamas landfill, as well as to denounce the sanctions they are receiving and the high price of fuel.
The strike will begin at 06:00 hours in front of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and will concentrate carriers of the island, both goods and construction, the private and public sector.
“This agreement has been reached in view of the fact that our politicians, after several meetings with them, believe that they have not fought enough to achieve the objective of modifying these managements”, explain from the Cooperative.
The extraction of jable and waste management
The main complaint focuses on the extraction of jable in the area between the villages of Muñique and Soo. “We defend ourselves because it is an extraction zone”, they insist, responding to criticisms and complaints about illegal extractions by some companies.
“The transport sector is fighting for the discomfort of the news that was broadcast on La Sexta in the past days, where they treated us as criminals”, emphasizes its president, Artemio Callero Rodríguez. In addition, he adds that “several meetings have been held with the sector and the respective political representatives”, but they remain “in the battle, without having any response” to their requests.
They also denounce “the impediment of the waste management of the Zonzamas landfill”, pointing out that they “reject trucks, for not carrying the waste, according to them, well separated”.
“They are the ones who do not meet the legal conditions of the landfill, and they demand that the carriers take responsibility for the waste, well, some yes, others no, depending on where it comes from and who sends it”, explain from the Lanztransport Cooperative. “To the town halls yes”.
“They are not aware that if they reject half of the waste they previously dumped, it will go to some outside place”, adds Callero Rodríguez. “This management is a setback, let them comply first, and then we raise awareness among the population”.
Sanctions and the increase in fuel
Likewise, the carriers have expressed their discontent with the “sanctions of the Cabildo”. “They have us overwhelmed in such a way that it is more worthwhile to stay at home”, they expose. “They have no flexibility, we demand that each sanction be looked at with a magnifying glass and be somewhat more flexible in who deserves it”.
Finally, the Transport Cooperative of Lanzarote wanted to highlight the problems caused by the high price of fuel, which is breaking historical records.
“How is it possible that in Lanzarote the price of fuel has risen so much, compared to the neighboring islands”, points out its president. “Something has to be done, lower the tax somewhat, even if we know that there will be a limit, but something they can help us, we are on the road all day and we are not valued at all”.
“When we were in a pandemic, we were the heroes together with Health, we worked at all times and now, that we have to move forward, what they do is put obstacles in our way at every moment and place”, they insist.
“This that today for some does not look so serious, soon they will see that it is the beginning of a very hard crisis”, highlights the president of the Cooperative. “There are solutions and we have resources, but everything is impediments. We cannot allow this mismanagement by the Cabildo”.
