The scientist Margarita Salas, Doctor of Science and National Research Prize Santiago Ramón y Cajal, will give the talk "Woman and Science" on Friday, June 20, starting at 9:00 p.m., at the Castillo de San José. The proposal is part of the "New Humanism" cycle, organized by the [International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC)->http://www.cabildodelanzarote.com/tema.asp?idTema=205], which depends on the Art, Culture and Tourism Centers of the Cabildo.
Margarita Salas was born in Canero (Asturias) in 1938. She graduated in Chemical Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid (1963), and was directed by Severo Ochoa in her postdoctoral thesis at the University of New York. She has been a professor of Molecular Genetics at the Faculty of Chemistry of the UCM from 1968 to 1992, currently a Research Professor at the CSIC at the ["Severo Ochoa" Center for Molecular Biology (CSIC-UAM)->http://www.cbm.uam.es/mkfactory.esdomain/webs/CBMSO/plt_CBMSO.aspx?IdObjeto=1], an activity she has been carrying out since 1974 and Head of the line "Replication and transcription of DNA of bacteriophage 029", of great utility in biotechnology research.
Highly awarded scientist
She has received many awards, including the Rey Jaime I Research Prize in 1994, the Principality of Asturias Medal (1997), the Human Values Award from the Correo Group (1998) and was named Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universities of Oviedo, Polytechnic of Madrid, Extremadura, Murcia and Cádiz, among others.
