After two days of field and on-site work, conversation, group debates and sharing of conclusions, the people attending the participatory process on the future design of the Cabo Pedro plot agreed on the need for an urban park for the neighborhood, with parking in the immediate vicinity. Currently, the uses are limited to parking and dog walking, and the conditions of the land are extremely dirty and neglected.
The neighbors raised several possibilities, from the construction of an underground space for cars, taking advantage of the unevenness of the plot, to the habilitation of alternative land. And once parking was guaranteed, the imagination was unleashed in the most diverse proposals, with an eye on the restoration of the mill and the adjacent mareta, still in private hands, and the maintenance of the quarry's climbing wall, as milestones of the intervention and references of roots for the population of the neighborhood.
In addition, children's play areas, a pet enclosure, a kiosk, a perimeter area for sports, a pond, drinking water fountains, habilitation of the paths that are already used on a regular basis, planting of endemic vegetation and tall trees in the underground parking, which show their fronds through open holes on the surface, among others.
The Councilor of the Biosphere Reserve, Samuel Martín, present on both days, referred to the philosophy and objectives of the Arrecife, capital of the Biosphere program, which aims to incorporate sustainability criteria, generation of green areas and responsible management of resources into the urban fabric.
The proposals will go to the College of Architects
In this line, he encouraged the people who came to contribute their grain of sand to "not only think about the need for parking, but propose uses that qualify the neighborhood and improve the quality of life. Value, for example, the pedestrianization of Molino Street, which can act as a connecting route from the park to the Charco; do not limit yourself to thinking about the Cabo Pedro hill; its surroundings can also be subject to intervention and improvement," he recalled.
All the proposals, together with those collected through a questionnaire on the current and possible uses of the plot owned by the Cabildo, disseminated in recent weeks, will be passed on to the College of Architects, which will articulate all this information in the specifications of an ideas competition, for the design of the future public space of the La Vega neighborhood, in the capital of Lanzarote.
