The desire to help by doing sports moved almost 800 people this Sunday in the fifth edition of the Playa Blanca Solidarity Race. The sporting event left a very positive balance in strictly economic terms, with 6,278 euros raised for the purposes of the Creciendo Yaiza Association. For the southern City Council, participation in the race also demonstrates "the citizens' commitment to causes as laudable and sensitive as the care of children with special educational needs".

The mayoress of Yaiza, Gladys Acuña, present at the event together with the councillor for Sports, Daniel Medina, has thanked "the solidarity gesture of each of the registered participants, young and old, which translates into effective help for the children and young people who benefit from the Association". Daniel Medina also wanted to highlight the work of both the group of volunteers and the staff of the Hotel Princesa Yaiza and the Yaiza Town Hall, entities that make the Southern Solidarity Race possible.

Rafael Trinidad and Yolanda Gutiérrez crowned the podium

The athlete from the Calima Triathlon Club of Fuerteventura, Rafael Trinidad, won the 4,500-meter course along the Playa Blanca promenade with a record of 14:40 minutes. The podium of the absolute category was completed by Suso Albar, 25 seconds behind the winner, and Álvaro Bernal, who arrived 50 seconds behind the first. Trinidad added his 27th victory of the year on December 27, 2015, a year full of successes where he participated in 40 races of various distances. "Suso Albar launched the race and we were together for the first three kilometers, but then I pushed to take the victory," said the winner, who described the course as "very fast." For safety, the race, which initially proposed 5 kilometers in the absolute category, was shortened by 500 meters due to the strong waves in one part of the course.

The Playa Blanca Solidarity Race also discovered the victorious smile of Yolanda Gutiérrez, first female classified. The Galician athlete is on vacation in Lanzarote and did not miss the opportunity to continue her preparation planning for the Seville Marathon next February, where she hopes to achieve the minimum mark of 2:33 hours to represent Spain at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "I felt very good in Playa Blanca and I am delighted with Lanzarote, the island is beautiful," she said.

The high participation was also very noticeable in the minor categories. Marcos Borges won among the little ones under 5 years old with a distance of 200 meters, while in the 500-meter course, for children between 5 and 9 years old, Oscar Ewen won. For his part, Eder Camino won in the 2.2 kilometers of the children's category, which brought together children between 10 and 13 years old. Thus, children, young people and adults turned the Playa Blanca promenade into a sports festival imbued with solidarity.

Therapeutic support for 50 children with the money raised

The 6,278 euros raised this year, 2,000 more than in 2014, will be invested in the Integra project of Creciendo Yaiza. "It is about offering therapeutic support to about 50 children with weekly sessions of physiotherapy, speech therapy, psycho-pedagogical assistance and occupational therapy, among other services," explained Ligia Molnar, head of the Association. The money from the auction of T-shirts from the Playa Blanca Solidarity Race will go to the same purposes. María Navarro, a tourist from Playa Blanca, paid 220 euros for an Atlético de Madrid shirt signed by players from the first team. Although she is a Real Madrid fan, María made the expense to give it to her husband, "an Atlético fan at heart", and collaborate with the cause.

Gladys Acuña and Daniel Medina, in addition to presiding over the awards ceremony next to executives from the Hotel Princesa Yaiza, hung symbolic medals on the children and young people who are cared for by Creciendo Yaiza, the real winners of this sporting day starring Playa Blanca.
