Warm colors to welcome one of the most famous festivals, the carnival. This is one of the main characteristics of the poster announcing the celebration in the capital of Lanzarote for next year. The sheet was officially presented yesterday at an event attended by the author of the poster, Óscar De León Umpiérrez, together with the acting mayor Nuria Cabrera and the Councilor for Festivities Encarna Paéz.
In addition to its striking colors, the poster includes two basic elements. The first of them is a sardine whose shape is outlined with mixed black letters and a clown's eye, nose and mouth. The drawing is located on the left side of the sheet. In the background is the Puente de las Bolas, one of the most emblematic places in Arrecife. "What I have tried to reflect are characteristic elements of Arrecife that at the same time remember the carnival," explained Óscar De León Umpiérrez.
Process
At 24 years of age, the author of the poster is studying the second year of Illustration at the Pancho Lasso Art School. He is passionate about design. For this reason, although he is currently in his training years and still does not know what his dedication will be in the future, he assured this newspaper that he would like to dedicate himself to illustration in advertising "since it is a broad field where I believe I will be able to develop what I like the most."
Without a doubt, being the winner of this contest is an important recognition of his way of working. In fact, the presentation of the sheet has been done well in advance of the carnival celebration "because the poster is wanted to be taken to the London tourism fair and Fitur", explained Nuria Cabrera.
In this way, the celebration also becomes one of the tourist attractions for Lanzarote in order to that in months like February or March visitors also arrive to the Island. Regarding this aspect, Óscar De León Umpiérrez was very satisfied, since it will mean that many people will see his work.
A difficult road
However, he recognized that reaching this point has not been easy. In fact, many of his schoolmates entered this contest, of which he has finally been the winner after the difficult debate of the jury composed of members of the Culture Department of the capital City Council.
Finally, Nuria Cabrera wanted to thank the participation, as usual, of the students of the Pancho Lasso Art School in the carnival poster contest. This implies an interest in promoting the departure and recognition of future artists from Lanzarote.
