The Government of the Canary Islands maintains the weather alert for heavy rains and snow after the prediction of the National Institute of Meteorology that warns that 30 liters per square meter will be exceeded in 12 hours in practically all the islands, and levels of up to 10 centimeters of snow above 1,800 meters.
The province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife will be the one that registers the most pronounced meteorological phenomena, and up to 90 liters in 12 hours may be registered on the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera, mainly affecting the south and east of the islands.
In addition, it is likely that in La Palma and Tenerife 10 centimeters of snow will be reached locally above 1,800 meters. This alert situation will be maintained throughout today, tending to subside from the first hours of this Tuesday, January 10.
As for the province of Las Palmas, on the island of Gran Canaria 60 liters will be recorded in 12 hours throughout today in midland areas and high areas facing south, while on the south and east coasts it is likely that 30 liters will be reached in 12 hours.
For its part, in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura there is also the possibility of rainfall reaching 30 liters in 12 hours, although with a fairly low probability index. This situation is expected to subside throughout this afternoon, while for Gran Canaria the situation is expected to continue until the end of today.
Recommendations
Some of the recommendations given by the emergency services to avoid risks due to the alert is to always have a flashlight and battery-powered radio on hand, which, of course, are in good condition. It is advisable to pay attention to the information given on the radio and to have family members located. In case of emergency, call 112.
If the rains are very intense, you must avoid crossing flooded areas, stay away from stream beds or low areas of hillsides and hills, due to the risk of avalanches of water, stone or mud.
It is advisable to go to the highest points in the area susceptible to flooding. You must avoid driving and, in any case, do not cross flooded fords due to the risk of the vehicle being dragged by the water. Basements and ground floors of buildings must be abandoned, electricity, gas and water must be disconnected and electrical appliances must not be touched if they are wet.
