The Cabildo of Lanzarote, through the Youth area coordinated by Paula Corujo, will organize this Saturday, September 4, between 10:00 and 14:00 hours, the second-hand market 'Trueque'. The event will take place in the Plaza de Santa Elena in Playa Honda and will aim to promote sustainability through responsible textile use. This activity will be developed in collaboration with the City Council of San Bartolomé and will be the closing of the ECO Al Planeta project.
The island councilor of Youth, Paula Corujo, invites the island population to attend this initiative "that will allow all of us to actively and effectively practice sustainability, and with it the Sustainable Development Goals included in the 2030 Agenda" and expresses the importance of giving a second life to garments in good condition, reducing consumption and the impact it generates on the environment.
In parallel to the market, this Saturday various activities such as storytelling, music and a workshop on the construction of a textile piece will also take place, which will be a cloth bag that will be designed by hand with an artisan, and also, a textile piece that we have at home will be 'reformed' to give it a second life.
Operation of the market
To ensure an optimal, organized and safe operation of the event, there will be various lines with wooden obstacles where the clothes will be placed to prevent them from being 'handled' and so that they can be seen instantly. There will also be some tables where to place the clothes that can no longer be put in these mobile lines that will be enabled for the occasion. The garments will be divided by colors. Each line will have a large circle indicating the color that identifies with the value that has been given to the garments, so that they will be classified into three colors: white, blue and yellow.
The participants will initially exchange their garments for colored cards depending on the value assigned to each one. White will be for the simplest and cheapest garments, blue for intermediate garments of medium quality and yellow for the highest quality garments.
In this way, the exchange will only be possible between garments of the same color, and with it, a similar value.
At the end, people will be able to collect the leftover clothes they brought at the beginning if they do not find any to exchange, as long as they hand in the cards that indicate that they did not find anything to take back, or leave them to donate to Calor y Café or another NGO.
The clothes to be exchanged must be washed and will be previously analyzed and disinfected through a service specially contracted for the occasion to corroborate their good condition and guarantee health safety. It will be necessary to bring the clothes at 9:00 am, one hour before the 'Sustainable Exchange' begins.
