The Auditorium of Los Jameos del Agua hosted last Friday the Institutional Act of Canary Islands Day, an act in which, in addition to the institutional speech of the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, you could enjoy the performance of Cantador Sinfónico, a musical group formed by an orchestra of more than 20 musicians and three powerful vocalists.
The event, held on Friday night and hosted by journalist Érica Cerdeña, hung the sold out sign, with tickets sold out for days, and with the presence of numerous public, as well as authorities and representatives of the institutions and civil society of Lanzarote.
The night began with the interpretation of the Anthem of the Canary Islands by the three singers who give the group its name, Ciro Corujo, Manuel Estupiñán and Pedro Manuel Afonso, accompanied by a timple and a guitar.
Sustainability as a driver of development
Subsequently, the president of the Cabildo began her institutional speech, recalling that this symbolic space, created by César Manrique, has hosted and given name "to the greatest commitment made by the Canary Islands to its future", in reference to the Pact of Los Jameos, signed last December.
For her part, Corujo declared herself optimistic about that future and insisted that, right now, Europe, Spain, the Canary Islands and Lanzarote go hand in hand, by deciding to "turn sustainability, environmental and social, into the true engine of their development". In addition, she pointed out that the island will have numerous resources that "will be used for policies that will allow us to advance in the transition towards a climatically neutral, sustainable and respectful society with the limits imposed by the natural environment".
"It is a decision with which Lanzarote feels comfortable and satisfied, as it reminds us greatly of the decisions we adopted years ago, when we learned to distinguish the difference between growth and development", she added.
The president also wanted to address that within this more immediate future, the island has an "exciting challenge" ahead, to achieve that "Lanzarote is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO". "The proposal "Lanzarote human landscape" places our landscape as a fundamental element of the consideration of Lanzarote as a World Heritage Site. A landscape built halfway between our people and the volcano", she assured.
Finally, the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote concluded by stating that "today we celebrate Canary Islands Day and we do so with the pride and satisfaction of knowing that during the rest of the year we make every effort to build a Canary Islands that is worth celebrating. That is our commitment", she concluded.
Cantador Sinfónico put the final touch
The event ended with the musical performance of Cantador Sinfónico, which featured the timplista Domingo Rodríguez "El Colorao" as a surprise.
The repertoire consisted mainly of Canary Islands folklore, although with some Latin American-influenced themes, such as a bolero, followed by seguidillas and folías, and some popular themes such as Tamadaba, to finish with "Patria Canaria" by Braulio.
