Teguise presented this Thursday the highlights of the new edition of the Carnival of La Villa, Costa Teguise and La Graciosa, which starts this Friday "with a varied and attractive program marked by the consolidation of a unique show in the Canary Islands, such as the Traditional Carnival of La Villa de Teguise". This event, which will take place on Friday, March 2, promises to be "the largest gathering of carnival expressions with the most history in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands and, on this occasion and as a novelty, also from Portugal".
"Teguise is the cradle of one of the most unique carnivals in Spain and it is, therefore, very interesting that it becomes the host of the oldest expressions of the Canarian, Spanish and Portuguese carnival, in an event in which the public will be able to contemplate the cultural, ethnographic and artistic wealth that connects us with other places in the world", said Benito Cabrera as promoter of the Traditional Carnival of Teguise, convinced that it is not at odds with the celebration of the carnivals of the 21st century. "Both can coexist perfectly without losing our essence, which is what differentiates us from the rest of the carnivals in the world," added Cabrera.
The Great Carnival Parade of Teguise will take place on Saturday, March 3, as pointed out by the Councilor for Culture and Festivities, Olivia Duque, who highlighted "the ability of Costa Teguise to offer a parade for the whole family, and in which floats, troupes, musical groups and masks from all over the island will participate, forming a river of color and joy, under the attentive and curious gaze of tourists".
The head of the area thanked all the groups for their involvement and highlighted the municipal commitment to a new edition of the Murgas Contest and the Draq Gala, as well as other events on the program, such as the CanNaval (pet costume contest) or the carnival parades, as well as musical performances on Market Sunday, without forgetting the unique Graciosa Carnival, which will take place from March 9 to 11.
For his part, the mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort, invited all the citizens of the island of Lanzarote to participate and to "consume the history of the Carnival of the 600 years and also its music, because in Teguise not only will the bells ring, but the sound of drums, fun and massive participation will be heard". "I am convinced that it will be done with the utmost respect for our heritage and for our neighbor, showing off the civic spirit that has been felt in previous editions," Betancort pointed out.
The complete program is available on the website teguise.es but, to make it better known, the history of Teguise has been introduced into the world of comics through the vignettes of the illustrator Antonio González, which have been transformed into a promotional video that can be seen on social networks.
