Rosana is the Canary Islands singer who generates the most copyright for the General Society of Spanish Authors (SGAE), as highlighted this Friday, at the presentation of the Society's 2007 Report, by the general director of the SGAE, Enrique Loras, the delegate in the Canary Islands, Octavio Álvarez, and the Tenerife artist and member of the SGAE, Caco Senante, who assured that Pedro Guerra and Los Sabandeños also "have tremendous weight".
During the informative event, it was highlighted that the growth of copyright in the Canary Islands last year was 4.73 percent, generating 14.8 million euros of the 395 million that existed throughout Spain. This, according to Enrique Loras, "demonstrates that there is great musical and performing arts creativity in the Archipelago".
However, the behavior of cinema in the islands was very similar to that of the rest of Spain, with declines in revenue and in the number of viewers, but despite everything, the average expenditure per inhabitant on copyright was 7.3 euros per year, although the national average exceeded eight euros.
NUMBER OF AFFILIATES
During 2007, the number of affiliates to the SGAE also grew to 2,347, representing 4 percent of the total number of associates in the entire country.
The delegate of the SGAE in the Canary Islands, Octavio Álvarez, also highlighted the "spectacular increase" of 20.87% compared to 2006 in the representations of theater, dance and other performing arts in the Canary Islands. Thus, he emphasized that the world premiere of the opera 'Hija del Cielo' with music by Juan José Falcón Sanabria from Gran Canaria, lyrics by Guillermo García Alcalde and artistic direction by La Fura dels Baus, "was the production that produced the most copyright in 2007".
This work is followed by Metamorfosis, which was performed at the Teatro Guimerá from January 18 to 21, and the Gronholm method at the Teatro Cuyás in Las Palmas from January 19 to 23.
Likewise, he explained that modern live music has experienced a significant rise as a result of the greater tendency of the islands to attend concerts.
CONCERTS
In that line, he said that the copyright managed in 2007 represented 13.16 percent more than in 2006 and that the performances in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and in Santa Cruz de Tenerife of the group Maná on the 'Amar es combatir' tour were the ones that produced the highest income. These were followed in order of importance by the concerts of Joan Manuel Setrrat and Joaquín Sabina, on their 'Dos pájaros de un tiro' tour.
In addition to these modern music concerts (pop, rock, jazz, etc.), the ones by Fito y Fitipaldis and Silvio Rodríguez in Las Palmas and Tenerife, as well as one by La Oreja de Van Gogh and another by Joe Cocker in Tenerife, generated more copyright in the Canary Islands.
In relation to classical music, the events that contributed the most copyright took place at the 2007 Canary Islands Music Festival: those of The Netherlands Simphony orchestra at the Alfredo Krauss Auditorium in Las Palmas and at the Tenerife Auditorium and those of the Berliner Phiharmoniker, among others.
During the press conference, reference was also made to the increase in the social mass of the SGAE in the Canary Islands, since 122 musical, audiovisual and performing arts creators residing in the Canary Islands were incorporated, 5.48 percent more compared to 2006.
Thus, of the 2,347 members: 2,063 are related to music, 85 are from performing arts, 76 from audiovisual, 17 are music publishers and the rest, 106, are dedicated to other things. Also, Álvarez added, in 2007 more than 1,000 new works were registered in the Canary Islands, of which 1,005 are musical, 20 are dramatic and 6 are audiovisual.
The general director of the SGAE emphasized that this organization generated 395 million euros throughout Spain last year, 14 percent more than in 2006. This money was distributed among 31,626 member authors who collected it for "the 682,327 works that have yielded something in the different exploitations".
The Canarian singer Caco Senante clarified that the 14 percent increase is "spectacular" but that it is due "to money that had not been able to be collected in previous years and that justice has forced organizations to pay copyright that they had not paid before".
In the same line, the director of the SGAE added that part of those millions come from an agreement with TVE, "which should have been paid for five years and has done so now". He also clarified that there are other cases such as Cuatro and Digital Plus that are in the courts.
They did not forget to remember that of the 91,000 members that the SGAE has, only 10 percent "make it to the end of the month" and the digital canon "is so that the rest, 90%, have a decent life", said Senante. Also, the director of the General Society of Spanish Authors assured that "only 10 percent of the associates earn above the minimum interprofessional wage".
