The artist Pepe Dámaso will donate some 600 works from his important legacy to Lanzarote. Dámaso, winner of the Canary Islands Arts Award and invested as Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has expressed his desire for the City Council of Tías to be the depositary of these works.

The preliminary agreement for said donation was recently signed at the Tías City Council with the presence of Dámaso, the mayor, Pancho Hernández, and the deputy mayor and councilor for Culture, Jerónimo Robayna.

Among the artistic works, documents and archives that Dámaso donates to the island of Lanzarote, the private collection of works by César Manrique would be included, as well as the documentation, photographic archives, correspondence and cinematographic material that the artist preserves from the 40 years of friendship with Manrique.

Steps to close this donation

From the Tías City Council they were "aware" of Pepe Dámaso's "wishes", who wanted his artistic legacy to be present on all the islands of the Archipelago. Thus, he transmitted his request in the autumn for Tías to host this important legacy with more than 600 works, within a global agreement that the Dámaso Foundation will sign with the Parliament of the Canary Islands as guardian of his entire artistic legacy.

This coming Thursday, the Board of the Parliament of the Canary Islands is scheduled to meet in Lanzarote, where the wishes of the Canarian artist will be detailed so that his work and artistic legacy are present in each of the Canary Islands.

On Friday, February 7, a press conference is also scheduled in Lanzarote where the artist, the mayor of Tías, and the Councilor for Culture will report on the details of this donation and the City Council's wishes to host a permanent exhibition of this collection.
