More than a hundred residents of La Graciosa demonstrated on Thursday morning through the streets of the town of Caleta del Sebo as a sign of rejection of the decision to close a road on the island as it passes through Playa Lambra.
The demonstration went through the main streets of the town of Caleta del Sebo, passing through the areas of the society, the corrals to end at the pier. The attendees to the mobilization carried banners of all kinds, megaphones and whistles. Around an hour of protest in which people participated on foot, by bicycle or in jeep. Everyone chanting slogans of "more management and less prohibition", "coasts listen, La Lambra is not touched" or "the united people will never be defeated".
The demonstration ended at the pier where four residents read a manifesto in which they "show the feeling of a people that rebels, since they are making important decisions in their environment without a process of citizen participation with the residents of the island".
Manifesto
"The people of La Graciosa rise up to say no to the closure of Playa Lambra. A people that, like many, has always worked to get ahead. Today we stop and want to be heard. It cannot be that this island continues to be managed and our opinion is not taken into account. We are the ones who live here and we also count. It is true that for years we have demanded that the roads be repaired, but we want it to be known that we do not agree with the way things are being done.
We do not think it is right that Costas, in order to authorize the repair of the roads, makes the closure of Playa Lambra a condition. That road was already used long before the coast law, it is included in the 2006 management plan and, curiously, it was already conditioned in 2009 with funds from Plan E. That road is used by both residents and tourists to go to the beach, to go fishing or simply to take a walk around the north of the island. We agree that it is necessary to regulate the circulation of vehicles, but we do not think it is right to close one of the only three roads we have.
Remember that in 2006 the access to the Barranco de los Conejos or Montaña Amarilla had already been closed. During these last weeks we have conveyed our discontent with this decision. We have met with coasts and with several of the institutions responsible for the island. We have proposed alternatives, such as opening a new road or using the same one with conditions, but our proposals have not been useful. That is why we have reached this point, we want it to be known that we do not agree with the closure of Playa Lambra.
We ask both the Teguise City Council, as well as the Lanzarote Cabildo, the Government of the Canary Islands and the General State Administration to sit down and try to find a way not to close this road, because there are options, before opening new roads that spoil this territory much more.
Today the people of La Graciosa rise up and say loud and clear NO TO THE CLOSURE OF PLAYA LAMBRA!"
