The social and cultural association for women of Lanzarote, Mararía, has been awarded this year with the Meninas Canarias 2019 award granted annually by the Government Delegation of Spain in the archipelago. The feminist entity, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has been recognized for its "tireless work against gender violence, social awareness and the visibility of abuse in the private sphere".
The award will be presented by the Government Delegate, Juan Salvador León Ojeda, on November 25 in the Throne Room of the Delegation in the Canary Islands, together with those designated in the rest of the islands and the honorary mentions.
The president of Mararía, Nieves Rosa Hernández, has extended the recognition to the workers, the volunteers and all the public and private entities that collaborate in the fight against gender-based violence: "Because although the association is the visible face and who collects the award, the society of Lanzarote, with its commitment, its support and its generosity, allows us to continue working, year after year in pursuit of the unrenounceable objective of ending the mistreatment of women and achieving real and effective equality".
