Las Kellys have staged a new rally this Monday to demand the rights of cleaning ladies. This time it was in front of the Paradise Island hotel in Playa Blanca. With this rally in front of that establishment, the group wanted to denounce a series of "abusive practices" that it does not consider "worthy for the workers." "We are not going to tolerate any abuse," they say.
As they explained in a statement, the cleaning ladies of that establishment with a 4-hour contract have "a workload corresponding to 8 hours", while those with 8-hour contracts "have a workload higher than what they should." "That is, they end up working 9 or 10 hours a day. Of course, these extra hours are not paid," Las Kellys lament in that note.
This group, which started its call at 5:00 p.m., also assures that "the head of the housekeeping department psychologically abuses the workers, humiliating them and disrespecting them, forgetting that all cleaning ladies are people before being workers." "We deserve respect and demand fair and dignified personal treatment," they demand.
Among these practices, Las Kellys also denounce that some workers perform unpaid work through a practice that consists of hiring them, "without any contract being signed for two days, telling them that they are unpaid trial days." "In these two days, the 'kellys' work without anyone to monitor their work, therefore if no one can judge whether they do it well or badly. After these two days, they are told that they do not meet the company's requirements and therefore they are not going to hire them. And, of course, they are not paid either," they explain.
Faced with these situations, this group has staged what is now its second protest in front of a hotel. The first was on May 9, in front of the Barceló Teguise Beach hotel, which they claimed "tramples on the rights of its workers on a daily basis" and "constantly violates the provincial hotel agreement." This Monday, the demands were against Paradise Island and everything points to there being more. "We are not going to tolerate any abuse, we are not going to allow employers to continue enriching themselves at the expense of workers and their rights, both labor, social and constitutional," the statement concludes.
