Lanzarote wines from the 2020 vintage have been rated as "very good." Specifically, the 26 references analyzed in the tasting room of the Regulatory Council have obtained a median of 16.75 points, according to the valuation system of the body itself.
As in the past year, due to the health crisis caused by Covid-19, the Regulatory Council has decided not to hold the vintage rating event at the Qué Muac restaurant in the Castillo de San José, where this assessment is announced every year.
For the rating of the 2020 vintage, the tasting committee was made up of 10 experts, who assessed a total of 26 wines from the Lanzarote Wines Designation of Origin, from different wineries on the island. Among them were: 13 dry white wines from Malvasía Volcánica, 4 semi-sweet wines from Malvasía Volcánica, 1 dry white, 1 semi-sweet, 1 Blanc de Noirs, 2 rosés, 3 red wines and 1 moscatel. Once tasted and analyzed, they proceeded to add and calculate the median, the final result being 16.75 points. This figure corresponds to the rating of "very good" according to the valuation system applied by the Regulatory Council.
Darío Pérez, technician of the Regulatory Council, explains that in that vintage more than 1.3 million kilos of grapes were harvested and that the wineries attached to the Regulatory Council put more than 1.7 million bottles on the market. As for the varieties, Malvasía Volcánica represented more than 70% of the total production that entered the wineries; while another of the most outstanding varieties was Listán Negro.
In 2020, the Regulatory Council highlights that it had the effort of a total of 1,830 winegrowers, who worked more than 1,880 hectares of surface area in Lanzarote.
