A total of five salt mines from the islands will participate in the Official Agrocanarias 2020 Sea Salt Contest, which will finally be held in Lanzarote on October 14 and 15. The event was initially going to be held in Fuerteventura, but the restrictive measures marked by the red light that was activated on that island due to the increased incidence of Covid-19 led the organization to move the contest "to comply with all health guarantees".
Salt mines from La Palma (1), Lanzarote (1), Fuerteventura (1) and Gran Canaria (2) will compete in this contest with samples of sea salt and fleur de sel. For the phase corresponding to the section of "Best innovation, image and presentation 2020", another salt mine from Lanzarote will also participate. Regarding the evaluation process, it will be carried out through a blind tasting where the 10 members of the committee will assess the organoleptic properties of the different salt samples. In a first visual analysis they will take into consideration the color and its tonality, the brightness and the impurities. The sensation in the mouth as well as the tactile sensation will also be valued.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, which organizes this contest through the Canary Islands Institute of Agri-Food Quality (ICCA), states that "it guarantees compliance with the corresponding health measures with a rigorous protocol that contemplates the use of masks and PPE, safety distance, as well as the individual use of all materials".
The objective of this contest, for which they have chosen the Fariones hotel, "aims to publicize the diversity of salts produced in the Canary Islands, providing a quality distinction to the winners in the contest as support in their commercialization."
The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, stresses the relevance of a contest that "highlights the importance of salt as a product that in recent years has been positioning itself for its quality, favoring its commercialization and highlighting the great work done by its producers".
