Two young men who were fishing on the coast of Arrieta, in the municipality of Haría, had an unexpected surprise this Wednesday when they found a baby hammerhead shark. The event occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the northern town of Lanzarote.
In a video recorded by the young men themselves and shared with La Voz de Lanzarote, you can see how they carefully hold the small shark, before returning it to the sea. According to them, after seeing it, they decided to release it immediately to guarantee its survival.
This type of shark, easily recognizable by the characteristic shape of its head in the shape of a "T", belongs to a species considered vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Although it is more common in tropical and subtropical waters, its presence in the Canary archipelago, especially in its juvenile phase, is not unusual.
The appearance of this pup could be related to the migratory habits of the species and the marine currents in the area.
