The owner of the Zakarías driving schools in Lanzarote, Zakaría Mohamed, has publicly complained about the delays his students face in taking the theoretical driving test in Lanzarote. In a conversation with La Voz, he denounced that the time interval to get a date to take the exam is already two months on the island.

"They are drowning us," maintained Zakaría Mohamed, who owns one of the driving schools with the most students in Lanzarote. According to him, since the summer, the island's driving schools have had to schedule dates for their students two months in advance, which means that future drivers are forced to postpone the start of their practical lessons.

Mohamed has indicated that many students need to obtain their driver's license, whether for cars, trucks, or buses, as quickly as possible for work reasons, and that the continuous delays at the Directorate-General for Traffic are taking a toll on students. Some have even given up on the idea of obtaining these driving permits.

The owner of one of the island's main driving schools has pointed out that the responsibility does not lie with the officials of the Directorate-General for Traffic, who he says "do a good job," but rather with the lack of human resources.

Currently, the practical exams are indeed moving forward because officials from Gran Canaria come to the island once or twice a week to carry them out, while the theoretical tests are only done one day a week. In this regard, he added that since the head of the General Directorate of Traffic of Lanzarote left, the situation has worsened.

Zakaría Mohamed has also warned that, with the Christmas holidays approaching, when many students return to the island, "chaos" could occur if Traffic authorities do not take measures to tackle the waiting lists. "The solution is to enable more days a week, the classrooms are already in Lanzarote," defended the owner of Zakarías driving schools.

Finally, he added that while the relevant taxes continue to be paid, the population of Lanzarote is at a disadvantage compared to other regions of the country.
