“Hermine has left unprecedented rainfall records on the island at this time of year.” This was pointed out by the manager of the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, Enrique Espinosa, when assessing the consequences of the storm.
Haría and Islote led the way, with 62.5 liters accumulated; while 40.2 were recorded in Arrecife. Despite not having received the highest rainfall, the Cabildo emphasizes that the capital concentrated 90% of the 200 incidents that occurred on the island, "largely due to flooding in basements and ground floors."
Above Arrecife were also the 62 liters collected in the Cueva de los Verdes, the 49 from Guatiza, the 47.2 from Guime, the 45 from Órzola and the 42.2 from Pechiguera.
According to data from the Island Corporation, the accumulated amount in San Bartolomé was 38 liters, in Puerto del Carmen 35 and in La Graciosa 32.8.
"Leadership" of the Consortium and "maturity" of the population
“We have overcome this critical situation thanks to the extraordinary work and leadership of the Security and Emergency Consortium of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and the responsibility and maturity shown by the island's population," said the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo.
In addition, she valued "the permanent transfer of a team of firefighters from the Security and Emergency Consortium to La Graciosa to attend to any incident that may occur" on the Eighth Island. “It is a pioneering initiative that shows us the way for the future,” she defended.
The Councilor for Security and Emergencies, Marcos Bergaz, also wanted to thank the role of the citizens, “who have complied with the recommendations issued by the Consortium to reduce incidents.”
