On the morning of Epiphany, January 6th, Czarina C.'s disappearance set off **alarms for her son**. After she failed to show up for work, her son went to the police station to report her missing. Her case was in the **Viogén system**, for victims of gender-based violence, due to a previous police intervention. Upon arriving at the residence, located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the National Police found the lifeless body of the 43-year-old woman and that of her partner, Ricardo T., 35 years old.
The hypothesis being considered by the judicial investigation is that he took Czarina C.'s life and then committed suicide. Despite Czarina C. having gone to the police station during the summer of 2024, she decided not to report her partner. She stated that she was not afraid, that she did not want a restraining order or a forensic examination, according to information from the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands following her death.
Four out of ten women victims of gender-based violence renounced continuing with the reporting procedure against their abuser over the past year in Lanzarote. According to figures from the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) released by the Data Center, excluding the last quarter's renunciations. In this way, nearly four out of ten reports filed for gender-based violence ended with the victim withdrawing their complaint.
Between January and September 2025, a total of 495 complaints of gender-based violence were registered in Lanzarote. Of these, the majority were police reports with a complaint from the victim (255) or police reports with direct police intervention (164). In contrast, other complaints came through assistance services and third parties (25) or from injury reports (30). To a lesser extent, complaints were filed directly by the victims themselves without police intervention (five) or by their relatives during police intervention (thirteen).
High percentage of foreign women
According to provisional data from the National Statistics Institute, Lanzarote has 167,840 inhabitants. Women make up almost half of the island's resident population, with 83,451 registered. Of these, nearly 76% are of Spanish nationality and 24% are foreign. However, Spanish women victims of gender-based violence (225) and foreign women (215) in the same situation are practically on par. To this figure, we must add three reports from minors under guardianship. Thus, 43% of women victims of gender-based violence are foreign, even though they represent 24% of the women living in Lanzarote.
Injuries and mistreatment, the most frequent crimes
To a large extent, complaints of injuries and mistreatment are the most frequent. Among these, crimes covered by Article 153 of the Penal Code stand out, which contemplates psychological harm and minor injuries against women with whom they have had or have a romantic relationship or persons subjected to a power relationship. At this point, in the first nine months of 2025, 276 crimes of this nature were registered, an increase of 11% compared to the same period of the previous year.
To which are added the crimes under Article 173 of the same Penal Code, which contemplates physical or psychological violence, insults, and degrading treatment. On this occasion, 94 crimes of this nature have been detected, an 18% increase. In this regard, crimes for breach of sentence have also grown, with 31 cases and a 29% increase.
Finally, minor offenses and misdemeanors for insults have grown by 80%, with nine offenses, while those for unjust vexation have decreased by 19%, with 22 cases
