On the afternoon of this Friday, September 13, on the stage installed in the enclosure of the island craft fair in Mancha Blanca, the tribute to the craftswoman Hortensia Pérez Abreut was carried out.
Hortensia is a craftswoman who has stood out in the elaboration of her works made with the raw material extracted from the palm tree. Born in the town of Los Valles, municipality of Teguise, she learned alone the art of being able to make the hats of Lanzarote with a perfect and careful finish. When Hortensia was still a girl, she took her mother's hat, disassembled it and thus discovered how it had been made, and so she made one for her rag doll.
Hortensia, an orphan since she was eleven years old, did not have an easy life to get ahead. This year, her effort and work has been rewarded by the Lanzarote council by choosing her "Craftswoman of the Year".
The tribute ceremony was attended by the vice president of the council Joaquin Caraballo who gave her a bouquet of flowers, the Minister of Culture, Enma Cabrera who gave her a plaque and Rocío Arredondo, Minister of Industry who gave her a dvd, as well as a gift on behalf of all the fellow craftsmen made by themselves. On behalf of the Teguise town hall, the Councilor for Culture Olivia Duque and the Councilor for Works, Echedey Eugenio, presented her with the heraldic shield of the municipality.

Immediately afterwards, the folklorist and ceramic craftsman Fefo García gave her a ceramic and timple in hand, and gave her some Canarian songs, thus putting the final touch to this emotional tribute.
