The Canary Islands Coast Demarcation has authorized the occupation of the public maritime-terrestrial domain with the basic project of restoration, consolidation and improvement of the safety of two water mills in the Salinas de Janubio. The project has been presented by Carlos Padrón representing Salinas de Janubio SL, which produces sea salt by artisanal methods in this space located in the south of Lanzarote.
As reported by the company, the file was favorably reported by both the Cabildo of Lanzarote and the City Council of Yaiza. Thus, it is pointed out that "now only the southern Consistory needs to evacuate the mandatory municipal license for the works to begin", a procedure that Salinas de Janubio SL hopes will occur "quickly". And, the works of restoration, consolidation and improvement of the safety of the two water mills, located on the banks of the Janubio lagoon, must be completed before the end of this year 2021.
Once restored, the mills will be incorporated into the itinerary of guided tours that take place in that space and that are organized by Salinas de Janubio,
In recent years, Salinas de Janubio SL explains that it has been advancing in different lines of work, such as the opening of the Bodega de la Sal, the diversification of production, online sales or ecotourism. Likewise, the execution project of the Janubio Interpretation and Visitors Center, included in the Conservation Standards of the SIC, and whose authorship is by the architect Alberto Campo Baeza, is currently being processed.
Carlos Padrón represents the third generation of producers in Janubio, a space in which sea salt has been produced uninterruptedly since the late nineteenth century. The Salinas de Janubio are the largest and the largest production of sea salt in the Canary archipelago. They are considered "one of the most important saltworks on the planet", they emphasize from the company that exploits them.
