The Department of Education of the Arrecife City Council has launched the program "Family School", through the Canarian Employment Service (SCE), which will involve the hiring of an educational psychologist whose primary objective is to support the families of the municipality in the difficult daily task of educating their children. The program aims to provide training support to parents to equip them with the necessary resources to help them successfully face new educational problems. In addition, their attendance to the talks planned in the project will be facilitated, simultaneously organizing a recreational workshop for the children of the attendees.
According to the Councilor for Education of the capital's Consistory, Lorenzo Lemaur, who was accompanied by the Mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, and the educational psychologist Carmen Yasmina Hernández Bonilla in the presentation of this initiative, this educational project, which begins this Monday, March 14 and will last until next May, will serve as a complement to the school support program that the Department has been running since last January. "It also represents an important support for parents and teachers of the schools of Arrecife, who see in this project a help to achieve the curricular objectives of the children," said Lemaur.
For his part, the Mayor of Arrecife, Cándido Reguera, explained that the City Council is trying to "respond to the wide range of concerns of families in the task of educating their children, thus helping to dispel uncertainties." For the capital's first mayor, programs such as "Family School" represent "the involvement of public institutions in the primary task of educating future generations, contributing to the prevention of unwanted situations with professional psychoeducational assistance".
In this way, the Mayor of Arrecife positively valued the launch of this project which, "in addition to creating employment, the main objective of the same, is involved in solving current problems of education, helping parents of the capital to face issues as complicated as the emergence of new technologies or attention deficit, among others".
Five essential contents
The "Family School" project has five essential contents: students and specific needs for school support in terms of attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity and Asperger's syndrome; education for coexistence, including conflict resolution; as well as health education in terms of eating habits, affective-sexual education or prevention of drug addiction.
This educational project also emphasizes the family as an educational setting, and education for consumption, in terms of new addictions such as the Internet, video games, in addition to the power of advertising.
As explained by the educational psychologist Carmen Yasmina Hernández Bonilla, the program will be developed in weekly sessions of 90 minutes, through talks/workshops in the 10 primary schools of the municipality, which will be coordinated by the City Council of Arrecife in collaboration with the AMPAS of the centers and associations that perform work related to the topics to be discussed in each session.
Social networks among families
In addition to serving as a contact between the families of primary school students, the City Council and educational centers, as well as offering a program of training activities that meet the needs and demands of parents, this project also aims to promote the creation of personal networks among the families of students, offering them a time of leisure and meeting.
Carmen Yasmina Hernández pointed out, finally, that the talks of each center have been organized according to the preferences of parents and teachers. For this, detailed the educational psychologist, "at the beginning of this project questionnaires were presented to AMPAS and directors of the schools, in which they reflected the level of interest of each topic, as well as the schedules and days in which they preferred the informative sessions to take place".
