Andrés Fuentes, a key figure of socialism in Lanzarote for decades, has died this Friday at the age of 75. His commitment to island politics and his involvement in public life marked a career of more than four decades, during which he held numerous institutional and organic positions in the Socialist Party.
Fuentes was a councilor in the Arrecife City Council for 24 years, as well as a regional deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands for one legislature. He also served as advisor to the Island Council of Lanzarote on two occasions and held important responsibilities within the PSOE: he was general secretary of the local group of Arrecife, member of the Island Executive, of the Island Committee and of the Federal Committee of the party.
Beyond his political work, Andrés Fuentes was also a regular voice in local media. He collaborated with Radio Lanzarote, La Voz de Lanzarote and Lanzarote Televisión, especially in spaces dedicated to political analysis and his great passion: sailing.
Another of his great loves was the Arrecife Carnival, a festival he attended every year with enthusiasm and where it was common to see him accompanied by his inseparable friend José Domingo Hernández Álvarez, with whom he shared many of his carnival experiences.
The death of Andrés Fuentes represents a notable loss for the recent history of Lanzarote. Politicians, party colleagues and neighbors have already begun to express their condolences for the disappearance of a man who dedicated his life to public service and the defense of socialist values on the island.
