From this Sunday, pets have a place to take a dip in Lanzarote. This is the section of Guacimeta beach that is under the airport runway. About 200 people with their pets 'inaugurated' it this Sunday, attending the gathering organized by the Department of Environment and Beaches of the Tías City Council and the Sara Association, which fights for the protection of animals.

Since the end of last January, pet bathing has been authorized in this section of the Tías coastline, after the City Council obtained authorization from Costas and modified the municipal ordinances. The identification panels in the authorized area inform users, bathers and, especially, dog owners about the 200-meter authorized area. Along the pedestrian area that runs along the lower part of the airport runway, the Tías City Council has also installed several special containers for the deposit of dog excrement.

Representatives of the Sara Association were present at the organized gathering, which was also attended by the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, who brought his pet with him, and several councilors from the city council. The representative of Sara, Ana Belén Domínguez, stated that in the association they are "excited to see such a good response" every time they organize an event. "On this special day, we are all celebrating getting, together with Pancho Hernández, mayor of Tías, a new piece of beach where dogs are allowed," said Domínguez, thanking the mayor and the City Council for "taking that great step towards respect and understanding with our family members: dogs." "Without fear of criticism, thank you for betting on a better world in harmony," she said.

"We have a new social reality and in Lanzarote there are many people with pets who demanded this type of area. But, in addition, Tías is a tourist municipality and we have the main area of the Island. With this beach for pets we also managed to make Puerto del Carmen become the first tourist destination in Lanzarote Pet Friendly'," said Pancho Hernández. The mayor stated that with this new beach it will be possible for "many more tourists from Europe who travel with their pets to choose Lanzarote and Puerto del Carmen as their destination."

From the Tías City Council they have recalled that the Beach Police Unit will monitor the area and the correct use of the ordinances by pet owners. The mayor pointed out that he expects "citizen collaboration and civic-mindedness from the citizens by depositing animal excrement in the special containers", which the City Council has installed throughout the area equipped with special bags.
