A study reveals that young women from the Canary Islands are the earliest to have sexual relations, with the average age of their first sexual intercourse being 18 years old, according to the study conducted by the pharmaceutical company HRA Pharma.
In this sense, 72.7 percent of the interviewees residing in the Canary Islands declare that their first sexual contact was with a stable partner, a figure lower than the average for the rest of the country (77.8). These data show that women from the Canary Islands wait less time to lose their virginity, compared to, for example, residents in the Levante region of Spain, who wait the longest to have sexual relations.
The highest percentage of women who claim to have had sexual relations is between 25 and 39 years old. In this age range, and if we talk about complete sexual relations, 88 percent of women from the Canary Islands state that they have had complete sexual relations, compared to other higher percentages, such as 100 percent of the Balearic interviewees.
Also, 59 percent of the Canary Island women surveyed admit to having been in danger of becoming pregnant at some point despite using a contraceptive method. Among those who affirm, when in doubt whether they are pregnant or not, having taken emergency contraception, it is noteworthy that 68 percent of Canary Island women have resorted to the second chance offered by emergency contraceptives on the market, such as the morning-after pill and the 5-day-after pill.
Contraceptive methods
When asked about the maximum available time to take emergency contraception, almost 50 percent of the women surveyed believe they have between two and three days. The Canary Island women consulted are not aware that there is a new 5-day-after pill, an emergency contraceptive that extends the time to five days and is also three times more effective than the classic morning-after pill. Its active ingredient is Ulipristal acetate, recently marketed in Spain.
On the other hand, one in three women who have had sexual relations has been pregnant at some point, with the average age of pregnancy being 26.4 years. This age is notably lower in the Canary Islands, which are the Spanish women with the lowest average age in their first pregnancy (24.3 years).
For 62.7 percent of the women interviewed, the education they receive, or have received, has been sufficient. In this sense, women from the Canary Islands are quite satisfied with their education, as 66 percent of the interviewees consider it sufficient.
