"Let us all unite, in the final fight. The human race, is the international." That chorus sounded this Sunday in the Plenary Hall of the Cabildo to say goodbye to the man who was its president for more than a decade, the socialist Enrique Pérez Parrilla.
Fists raised and the voices of many of those present chanting the emblematic song of the labor movement and the PSOE have been the last tribute paid to him in the Island Corporation, where the funeral chapel was installed.
Since eight o'clock on Saturday evening, hundreds of people have passed through the institution to say their last goodbye to Pérez Parrilla, who was also a regional deputy and mayor of Arrecife. Precisely while holding that position in the Consistory, he met the priest who participated in the funeral, and who recalled that the then mayor was the first authority to receive him, as soon as he arrived on the island 14 years ago.
In addition to many citizens, public officials from all over the island and from all political formations have passed through the funeral chapel to show their respects and convey their condolences to the family. Alongside them, many friends and historical members of the PSOE have watched over his body in these last hours.
The institutions have also expressed their condolences and sent wreaths of flowers, which filled the Plenary Hall and covered the corridor of the institution, including those of the Cabildo itself, the town councils and the Parliament of the Canary Islands.
At noon, the coffin was taken to the hearse that was in charge of the transfer to the Arrecife cemetery, where he was buried.
