The Cabildo of Lanzarote has opened its doors this Saturday to host the funeral chapel of the man who presided over it for more than ten years, Enrique Pérez Parrilla. Hundreds of people have come to say their last goodbye to the historic socialist militant, who has died at the age of 73.
From 8:00 p.m., dozens of Lanzarote residents began to come to the institution, queuing to access the Plenary Hall, where the coffin has been installed, surrounded by flowers and crowned with a PSOE flag.
After 10:00 p.m., more than 500 people had already passed through there and others were still arriving to pay their respects and accompany his widow, Nieves Rosa Hernández, and the rest of his family. Along with them, the president of the Cabildo, María Dolores Corujo, was receiving the people who arrived, and among them there were many public figures, but also anonymous citizens and those outside of politics.
In addition to the president, in the first hours the rest of the socialist councilors and also the two from Podemos, Myriam Barros and Jorge Peñas, and Juan Manuel Sosa, as well as other former presidents of the institution, such as Dimas Martín and María José Docal, have approached the funeral chapel.
The mayors of San Bartolomé and Tías, Alexis Tejera and José Juan Cruz, both from the PSOE, and the deputy mayor of Haría, José Torres Stinga, have also been among the first to come to say goodbye to Pérez Parrilla, together with other public officials from the island and, above all, together with historical socialist militants.
Some of the most emotional moments were starred by Segundo Rodríguez, who was his right-hand man for years in the Cabildo, and also the historical member of the PSOE Guillermo León, who spent a few minutes in front of the coffin with his fist raised. Both have said goodbye in tears to who was their partner and friend.
They have been joined by other socialists such as Carmelo García Déniz and Manuel Medina, and also other personalities from the island, such as José Saramago's widow, Pilar del Río.
The funeral chapel remained open this Saturday until 11:00 p.m., reopening on Sunday from 9:00 a.m. The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m., departing from the Cabildo of Lanzarote to the municipal cemetery of Arrecife. In addition, a funeral mass will be held on Thursday, which is expected to be attended by the president of the Canary Islands Government, also socialist Ángel Víctor Torres.
