At least seven young people have already been identified by the Local Police as alleged perpetrators of the vandalism that the Islas Canarias park has suffered again. The City Council made several arrangements in this park a few months ago, but as La Voz published last week, it is once again full of graffiti and damage.

"It's not graffiti, it's vandalism," the Councilor for the Local Police, Jacobo Lemes, stressed on Radio Lanzarote – Onda Cero. As he explained, as a result of these new acts of vandalism, surveillance in the area was intensified. In those rounds, the agents located seven young people with sprays, who were identified.

"The sprays were taken away from them, but they leave before the agents," the councilor joked, referring to the law that applies to minors. In fact, the City Council points out that in this case they are not even exposed to a fine, nor was their parents notified.

However, they have subsequently clarified that through the heritage route they can be forced to restore what they have damaged and through the infractions route the parents can be sanctioned, since they are minors.

And the damage they cause with these graffiti is great. "They are doing a lot of damage in the Islas Canarias park, since we are investing money in updating that area," the mayor lamented.

No surveillance cameras in Arrecife

Regarding how to prevent these episodes from recurring in the future, the councilor has referred to the need to put surveillance cameras into operation. In this regard, he has acknowledged that most are currently not working.

"We have had some notice from the industry, such as that they were not entirely correct. We have requested an audit to see what we have," he assured. "The problem is not the camera itself, but the fiber optics. A few years ago it was placed with the same pipes as the electricity and it seems that it has to go separately," he clarified.

Now, he affirms that this audit "is about to be completed" and from there "they will be able to act" and "put several cameras into operation in the city", since currently "a very low percentage" is working.
