The 40-year-old diver who died this Friday on the coast of Yaiza was trying to repair a breakdown suffered by the boat of the company he worked for. As confirmed by the Civil Guard, this man was an employee of an aquaculture company in charge of maintaining several fish farms near Puerto Calero. The Judicial Police team of the Civil Guard of Tías has already taken charge of the investigation to determine what happened.
So far, the information they have is that a rope had become entangled in the propeller of the company's boat and was hindering its operation. The diver then dived in to try to cut it. After failing on the first attempt, he re-entered the water and it was there that he suffered "a series of fatal cuts" with the boat's propeller.
It is unknown at the moment, however, if that has been the cause of death. Now, the autopsy must determine if it was the "serious" incisions generated by the propeller that caused his death or if, on the contrary, something happened to him during the immersion, such as a loss of consciousness or a heart attack that caused him to drown. In this sense, the forensic examination will clarify if the cuts on the body occurred before or after death.
The Civil Guard investigation must also determine if the tragic event was the result of an accident or if there was any kind of recklessness. Among other things, they will investigate why the propeller was activated or if whoever activated it knew that the diver was underneath at that moment.
The 112 was alerted to what happened at 11:00 a.m. by the Local Police and sent two ambulances, while the diver was transferred by boat to Puerto Calero. However, the medical personnel could only certify the death. The removal of the body took place at 1:00 p.m. and will now remain at the Institute of Legal Medicine, in the Arrecife Courts.
