Civil Guard arrests tourist in Lanzarote for faking the theft of his luggage

The Civil Guard of San Bartolomé arrested on December 23 a 21-year-old young man, with initials E.R.A. and of foreign nationality, as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of simulation of crime or false accusation, by faking the theft of his luggage on the public road of Tinajo.

The investigation began the day before, following the complaint filed by the young man, a tourist of foreign nationality, who reported an alleged theft on Avenida de los Volcanes in Tinajo. According to the complaint, a person stole a backpack of his property, which specifically contained 46 personal effects of various types and that, in total, according to E.R.A., amounted to a value of more than 4,000 euros.

Both the account of the events and the 'modus operandi' and the very descriptive list of what was stolen made the agents suspect that they could be facing a simulation in order to defraud the corresponding insurance company.

Caught at the airport with the allegedly stolen backpack

The agents requested the collaboration of the security detachment of the Guacimeta airport, who identified the detainee at the boarding gate when he was about to leave Spain, carrying at that time the backpack that had allegedly been stolen from him, which also contained inside a large part of the objects that he also reported as stolen.

Subsequently, the perpetrator of the events was arrested for an alleged crime of simulation of crime, continuing the efforts to determine if he reported to the insurer, in which case there would also be a crime of attempted fraud. The detainee was placed at the disposal of the corresponding Arrecife Duty Court, together with the instructed report and the seized effects.

The Civil Guard reminds that the simulation of a crime can entail fines ranging from 6 to 12 months, depending on the level of severity of the false crime and false accusations against third parties.
