The Association of Deaf People warns of scammers asking for money in their name on the island

The Cultural Association of Deaf People of Lanzarote (Asculsorlanz) has warned of a scam that has occurred in recent months on the island, in which some individuals pose as deaf and mute people and ask for money on behalf of this group. Asculsorlanz has pointed out that it is not the first time that the name of the association has been used "to deceive people by appealing to solidarity." For this reason, they have asked citizens to report any situation they know about in relation to this type of criminal act to police stations or the Civil Guard.

The organization has stated that "in the almost 22 years of operation and service to the citizens of Lanzarote, money has never been requested from people as individuals, and even less so, by approaching them on the street." In fact, they have explained that the Cultural Association of Deaf People of Lanzarote is funded by subsidies and aid from institutions and never asks people for money.

The only form of fundraising they have is "registration as a member" and in that case, they clarify that cash is never required "but through bank transfer." They have also recalled that it is "essential" to verify "the identification of the people who go in the name of the entity, as well as the legal data of the organization" before delivering any donation. They have also specified that "the person who goes in the name of the association always communicates through sign language."

Similarly, they have recommended that the population "before making donations" first make sure "by calling the phone number 928803275 of the headquarters" for any action.
