Coalición Canaria (CC) Lanzarote has shown its "utmost respect" for the people who recently participated in the citizen mobilization in defense of the Insular Hospital and has expressed its understanding of the existing concern about the future of an infrastructure that it considers part of the island's history and social and health heritage.
The nationalist party assures that it shares this concern and maintains that, precisely because of this, it is necessary to address the problems that currently affect the building to guarantee its conservation and recovery.
"What puts the future of the Insular Hospital at risk is not touching it, but not having done so for four years despite knowing the reports that warned of its serious deterioration," states the insular secretary of CC, Pedro San Ginés.
The nationalists insist on the need to act responsibly in the face of the center's situation, prioritizing the safety of users, patients, and professionals who carry out their work in the facilities.
In this regard, San Ginés affirms that Coalición Canaria will act with "responsibility and rigor," following the roadmap set by technical reports and professional criteria, moving away, as he indicates, from "populist or partisan approaches."
"We are not going to do what the Socialist Party historically did with the Insular Hospital, look the other way while the problem worsens," he maintains.
The nationalist leader recalls that, for decades, the PSOE maintained a management model that, in his opinion, contributed to the progressive deterioration of the Insular Hospital by remaining outside the health system and under the management of a local corporation.
Likewise, he highlights that it was Coalición Canaria who promoted its integration into the Canary Islands Health Service, a decision that, as he points out, allowed the center to be modernized, health care to be improved, and access to technological and care resources of the Canary Islands public network to be facilitated.
San Ginés also recalls that the technical reports warning about the deterioration of the infrastructure and the risks to its use were known by the previous socialist government since 2019.
Given this situation, Coalición Canaria supports measures aimed at transferring hospital activity to safe facilities "as soon as possible," guaranteeing the continuity of care and the quality of the attention provided to users.
The objective, as explained by the party, is to relocate the different services in a coordinated manner and according to the needs set by the center's management itself, including the Day Hospital.
The island secretary emphasizes that the urgency of the transfer responds exclusively to safety criteria and is independent of the existence of a definitive project or a financial allocation for the future restoration of the building.
"The urgency of the transfer of hospital activity due to risk to people responds exclusively to safety criteria, regardless of whether a definitive project or a financial allocation for the future restoration of the building exists, or the number of people who demonstrate, however respectable their concern may be," he states.
CC also recalls that this situation was already warned about by the Health Services Management itself during the socialist government's term.
According to a report issued in July 2023, the Management warned of the "serious situation" of the Hospital Insular's infrastructure and concluded that "they are not safe to house patients or workers." The document also requested the Canary Islands Health Service to adopt measures "with extreme urgency" to guarantee the safety of patients and professionals.
Regarding the future of the building, Coalición Canaria indicates that it will be defined based on the alternatives proposed by the Master Plan and the work of a technical commission responsible for evaluating the different options.
However, the party guarantees that the front building of the Hospital Insular will be restored and recovered to continue providing a public service to the citizens of Lanzarote.
Likewise, it clarifies that the elderly residence will not be affected by the planned actions and will continue to operate normally, maintaining the current environment for its residents. At this point, CC assures that it does not contemplate any intervention on that space and recalls that "the PSOE did propose to eliminate it."
Finally, Coalición Canaria rejects the opposition's accusations of alleged speculative interests surrounding the complex's future.
"There is no approach outside of the public interest. The objective is to guarantee the safety of users and workers, conserve the existing heritage and recover the Insular Hospital to continue putting it at the service of the citizenry, among other things because the Planning does not allow any other use than socio-health," concludes Pedro San Ginés.
