A 59-year-old man died yesterday in the Gran Canaria municipality of San Mateo after the roof of his house-cave collapsed, in which he was carrying out works, reported the Emergency and Security Coordinating Center of the Canary Islands Government.

The incident occurred at 09:12 hours in the Las Lagunetas neighborhood, where the house is located in which its owner died, the sources explained in a statement.

The victim was carrying out works inside the house-cave when its roof collapsed, which caused his death due to the serious injuries caused by the collapse.

Two ambulances from the Canary Emergency Service, a rapid intervention vehicle, a rescue helicopter, and a group of firefighters from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium attached to the Tejeda municipality park were transferred to the scene.

The firefighters were in charge of securing the property to facilitate the rescue tasks of the victim, who was trapped among rubble.

Once released, the medical personnel confirmed the death of the owner of the house-cave, which made the work of the helicopter, which was flying over the area to proceed with its aerial evacuation, unnecessary.
