The V Canary Islands Performing Arts Festival begins its program in Lanzarote with the performance of Rafael Álvarez El Brujo this Thursday, March 10, at the Municipal Theater of Tías. The performance, which will begin at 8:00 p.m., is called The Soul of Valle Inclán and is dedicated to the figure of the Spanish playwright and inspired by his work Divinas Palabras.
The Soul of Valle Inclán was the result of confinement, so it is a unique creation that arose in exceptional circumstances that, according to the author, relieved his melancholy. El Brujo describes Valle Inclán as a “mysterious and extravagant, romantic and aesthetic” man, and that is the ‘soul’ that he tries to transmit with his work.
All tickets can be purchased on the Festival website, www.festivalcae.com, for a price ranging between 10 and 25 euros.
About El Brujo
Graduated from the Royal Higher School of Dramatic Art, Rafael Álvarez El Brujo's activity with the theater began in the Corral de Comedias of the San Juan Evangelista University Hall of Residence, in 1970, with the staging of The Game of the Insects, by the Kappeck brothers and directed by José Luis Alonso de Santos. From that moment on, he regularly collaborates in theatrical performances of various companies, such as Tábano, TEI (Independent Experimental Theater) and Teatro Libre de Madrid.
In 1988, El Brujo founded, together with José Luis Alonso de Santos, Gerardo Malla and Jesús Cimarro, the theater production company Pentación S.A. and, in 1995, he embarked, together with Mª José Norte, to launch his own production company, Producciones El Brujo, S.L. dedicated to the distribution and production of theater and audiovisuals. Since 1986 he has combined his theatrical activity with film and television, participating in films such as El Crack, by José Luis Garci; La taberna fantástica and Don Juan, mi querido fantasma, by Antonio Mercero; La duquesa roja, by Paco Betriu; Niño nadie, by José Luis Borau, or Pajarico, by Carlos Saura, and, as a more recent experience, the adaptation of Lázaro de Tormes that Fernando Fernán Gómez made for the big screen, a film that won two Goyas from the Spanish Film Academy.
Regarding his television facet, it is worth highlighting the participation of Rafael Álvarez in productions as recognized as Vísperas, by Manuel Andújar; Juncal, by Jaime de Armiñán; Brigada Central, by Pedro Masó, or Maquinavaja. In December 2002 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts, the highest award granted by the Ministry of Culture.
