The CIC El Almacén will host next Friday, April 1, at 8:30 p.m., a screening of short films by Canary Islands filmmakers inspired by the novel “El Barranco”, by the Canary-Cuban writer Nivaria Tejera, and a round table on the role of women in culture.
This activity has been organized by the Education, Youth and Equality area of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and has been added to the agenda of events that began on March 8 to commemorate International Women's Day. The audiovisual project is an initiative of the Siendo Association and has had the support of the Canary Islands Institute for Cultural Development.
From the Corporation they point out that six audiovisual pieces will be presented, which have been made by the Canary Islands filmmakers Claudia Torres, Silvia Navarro, Daniasa Curbelo, Macu Machín, Estrella Monterrey Viña and Violeta Gil. In them, a reading of the novel “El Barranco” is made from video art, performance, documentary or film essay.
The event will be presented by the journalist and actress Isabel Cabrera, who will interview telematically the philologist, professor and researcher María Hernández Ojeda about the life and work of Nivaria Tejera. In addition, a round table will be held on the role of women in culture, in which four of the Canary Islands filmmakers who have made the short films that will be screened at the event will participate.
“We must give visibility to women in all areas of professional life and with this activity we want to contribute to it and encourage their participation in the cultural sector”, says the Councilor for Education, Youth and Equality of the Cabildo, Myriam Barros, who invites citizens to attend the event. Tickets are free and can be purchased through the portal www.ecoentradas.com.
Regarding Nivaria Tejera, from the Cabildo they remember that she was a poet, essayist and novelist who was born in Cuba in 1930 and died in Paris in 2016. Daughter of a Canarian father and a Cuban mother, she spent her childhood in La Laguna (Tenerife). “El Barranco” is the first novel about the Spanish Civil War in the Canary Islands, and narrates the conflict through the eyes of a girl who sees how her father is imprisoned. La Laguna is the main setting of the novel and another protagonist of the story.
