The skipper of a small boat that arrived in La Santa with 27 immigrants has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.

The Sixth Section of the Provincial Court has sentenced the skipper of a boat that arrived in La Santa with 27 immigrants in October 2018 to two and a half years in prison. The Prosecutor's Office initially requested a sentence of eight years in prison for the accused, but he admitted the facts during the trial held on June 5, and a judgment of conformity was issued.

According to the ruling, it is considered proven that M.D., against whom there is an agreement of return for illegal entry into Spanish territory, "in common agreement with other unidentified persons and moved by the desire for profit, charged various amounts of money to 27 immigrants to take them with him to the Canary coasts, knowing that they were violating the rules on entry into the national territory and that, once they arrived, they would be in an irregular situation in Spain".

The aforementioned boat left the coast of Tan-Tan (Morocco) and arrived in Lanzarote at about 8 am on October 25, specifically at the dock of La Santa, "with all the immigrants inside, thus achieving the desired purpose".

The accused, as he acknowledged, was the skipper of the aforementioned boat, helping himself to do so "with a GPS device". However, "the boat lacked any security system, as well as life jackets, thus endangering the lives of the immigrants".
