Turismo Lanzarote has carried out in recent years various campaigns to attract premium tourism, especially in North American and East Asian countries, which have very high spending levels, but there is a European tourism of high purchasing power, whose arrivals to the island disappear.

Tourism from Scandinavian countries has been reduced to less than half in the last decade, according to figures provided by the Lanzarote Data Center.

If in 2013, 136,021 travelers from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark arrived on the island, last year they did not even reach half, there were 67,352.

Fewer flights, worse economy and shame of flying

One of the main reasons is that there are fewer and fewer flights connecting the Nordic countries with the island. In the recently concluded winter, the air capacity with Denmark fell by 24.3%, with Norway and Finland by 33%. With Sweden the capacity remained.

Tourism attributes the decline also to economic factors. The increase in inflation in Denmark or Sweden, the economic slowdown and the weakness of the crown in Norway or the economic contraction in Finland due to trade restrictions in Russia, would have reduced the demand for travel in these countries.

Another phenomenon in these countries that Tourism highlights is flygskan or 'shame of flying' due to the environmental impact it has and that would have also contributed to reducing arrivals. A concept born in Sweden, but which has spread to other neighboring countries such as Denmark.

To recover Scandinavian travelers, Turismo Lanzarote is committed to promoting the island as a sustainable destination, making known its complementary offer and its own identity within the Canary territory with authentic experiences throughout the year.
