Canary Islands participates in the most important tourism fair in the Netherlands

Nearly 100,000 Dutch people, who consider the Canary Islands their favorite region in Spain, visited Lanzarote in 2022

Turismo de Canarias is present until January 15 at the Vakantiebeurs fair in Utrecht, considered the most important meeting of the tourism industry in the Netherlands. In the last edition, 124 countries participated and this year more than 100,000 visitors are expected to attend.

The first day was aimed at the professional sector, while the rest of the days are open to the public, who, in addition to learning about the offer of the destinations present, will be able to enjoy activities such as a diving pool, indoor surfing, skating and other entertainment.

The Minister of Tourism, Yaiza Castilla, explained that the Canary Islands, together with Catalonia, is the Spanish region preferred by Dutch tourists. Six out of ten tourists from this country repeat.

The Canary Islands stand, which will have seven counters and share space with Turespaña, is 85% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

 

Canary Islands receives more than 300,000 Dutch people per year

In addition to attending the fair, the Canarian delegation participated in the meeting promoted by the Spanish Tourism Office of The Hague in which the Spanish destinations have been able to learn about the activities planned for 2023 in the Dutch market and the latest data on the behavior and trends of travelers from the Netherlands.

During 2021, 314,758 passengers from the Netherlands arrived in the archipelago, according to Frontur data, which represents a share of 4.7% of the total of travelers. Its position in the ranking of markets based on the number of tourists is fifth, as is its position in terms of turnover. 40% of Dutch people travel to Gran Canaria, their favorite island, followed closely by Tenerife and to a lesser extent Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and La Palma.

The spending they make on average per trip is 1,222 euros, similar to the average for all markets (1,206 euros). Their average stay is 8.97 days, compared to 9.54 for other countries; the average daily expenditure amounts to 147.2 euros, slightly more than the average of 144 euros; while the total turnover in 2021 was 338 million euros.

Their main motivation is the good climate in 76.6% of cases, although they are also interested in the Canary Islands for the sea, tranquility, fun and beaches. On the other hand, the cultural offer is not so important for them, since only 3.5% consider this aspect as something relevant compared to the average of 8.7%. The average age is 43 years and 55% come as a couple.
