The housing crisis does not cease in Lanzarote, where in recent years the prices to rent or buy an apartment or a house have not stopped increasing. Available rentals are few and very expensive, which increases the difficulties in being able to have a home.
Of the approximately 60 properties available on one of the main real estate portals, 60% correspond to seasonal rentals. Which means that some are rented only by the week and others only month by month, so from the outset it is difficult to find a permanent home or for a long period of time. On other portals analyzed, the available homes are even fewer.
On the portal with the most listings, available prices range from 600 euros for the cheapest and least frequent, up to 15,000 for a seasonal rental in a 600-square-meter villa.
Homes under 1,000 euros only represent a small part, around 19% of the available listings. The vast majority of apartments in this range are small properties located in Arrecife or in towns in the north of Lanzarote. In addition, almost half are only available for short periods of time.
Most of the homes available for rent are between 1,100 and 1,800 euros per month. 55.9% of the listings are around this price. This would imply that to comply with the experts' advice and allocate only 30% of the monthly salary to rent, the family unit, if it is more than one person, would have to earn between 3,666 euros and 6,000 euros net per month. Half of the properties in this range are also seasonal.
Close to three out of ten ads (around 28.8%) ask for more than 1,800 euros per month. Among them, four luxury homes are offered, whose rent can vary between 3,000 to 15,000 euros per month. Also, half of these properties are for short stays.
Given the difficulties in renting a home in Lanzarote, social networks have served as a boost to find other options, often precarious. For example, groups with thousands of people have been created to rent rooms, others have opted to move to live in their cars or to rent land to place caravans
